Chataigne
On Saturday some of our students and staff decided it would be fun to go mushroom hunting. We all went to our family house in Salies and from there they decided that it would be a good idea to take a 3 1/2 hour hike while looking for mushrooms. We left knowing that no one else in the area had been able to find any mushrooms, but I guess they were up for a hike as well.
After about a 1/2 hour of walking we stopped for a picnic lunch. Then we were off again. After a couple wrong turns, finding a few hunters with their dogs (and praying they were not pointing their guns in our direction), and a couple outtings off the beaten path we decided there were no mushrooms.
Now came the fateful choice...continue around the path because it goes in a circle or turn and go back the way we came. The decision is made, forge ahead. Most of us decided to start gathering chataignes (these are chestnuts) which we planned to have for dinner that night.
Four others decided to run ahead and get the cars. Planning to come back and get us. A long time later we came to a road and got a phone call from those who went before us telling us that they had walked for 50 minutes from the spot where we were and they were just getting to the cars. This was an okay thought until we saw the sign that said it was illegal for cars to drive up that road. Us, being overly exhausted at this point from all of our chestnut gathering, were highly disappointed to hear that we would be walking another hour.
Magicly we got to the cars in about 20 minutes. I'll never tell how;) So overall our 3 1/2 hour hike took us between 5 and 6 hours. I think we made good time!
